When people talk about handmade soap, they often picture colours, shapes, or fragrance notes first. But at the heart of every bar—long before we pour it into the mould—there is something much more important: the ingredients that define how the soap feels on the skin. In our studio, the journey always begins with one key question: What makes a cleanser truly gentle, truly comfortable, and truly worth using every day?
For us, that answer leads not to long ingredient lists, but to a small selection of thoughtfully chosen materials, especially two coconut-derived ingredients that shape the character of our formula: Glyceryl Cocoate and Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI) powder.
Even though both come from coconut oil, they play different but beautifully complementary roles. Glyceryl Cocoate brings softness and slip, while SCI creates a dense, creamy foam that cleans without stripping the skin. Together, they form the gentle foundation of our handmade cleansing bars.
Coconut-derived softness as our base
Glyceryl Cocoate is what formulators call a non-ionic surfactant—which simply means it cleans without the sting or tightness that stronger detergents can cause. It behaves like a bridge between oils and water, allowing the bar to cleanse while leaving a conditioned, cushioned after-feel. Chemically, this ingredient is an ester formed from glycerin and coconut fatty acids, giving it both water-loving and oil-loving traits. That duality lets it coat the skin lightly, improving slip, smoothness, and softness.
When handled as a raw material, it feels a little oily—almost like a very light plant oil—but once incorporated into a soap or cleansing bar, it becomes something quite elegant. Instead of leaving the skin squeaky or dry, it offers a subtle, silky finish. This is why we use Glyceryl Cocoate as a mildness booster in our formula: it rounds the edges of cleansing, softens the experience, and creates a balanced bar that feels welcoming even for sensitive skin.
To ground this in something practical, our bars benefit from Glyceryl Cocoate in three ways:
– it improves lubricity during use, making the bar glide smoothly;
– it softens the skin’s after-feel;
– it enhances mildness by reducing cleansing harshness.
The result is a sensory experience that feels thoughtful, not accidental.
SCI: the “creamy-foam” partner
While Glyceryl Cocoate adds softness, SCI powder shapes the cleansing energy of the bar. Known in cosmetic science as an exceptionally mild anionic surfactant, SCI produces a rich, dense lather that feels almost lotion-like. It is derived from coconut fatty acids as well, but it behaves very differently from the harsher sulphate-based surfactants found in many commercial soaps.
SCI breaks into foam easily, even in hard water, and it cleans without disturbing the skin’s natural barrier. This is why isethionates—SCI’s ingredient family—are widely used in premium facial cleansers and solid shampoo bars. They offer the type of foam people love but without the dryness often associated with traditional soap.
When combined with Glyceryl Cocoate, SCI becomes part of a balanced system: one ingredient cleans with creaminess, the other adds conditioning softness. Together they create cleansing bars that feel luxurious in use and comfortable afterward.
Why this matters to our craft
In our studio, every formula begins with a simple idea: a cleanser should respect the skin first, then everything else. Choosing coconut-derived mildness is not a trend for us—it is the foundation of how we craft.
Instead of relying solely on traditional soap bases, we integrate gentle surfactants to shape the experience more precisely. Coconut-based ingredients allow us to design bars that lather generously yet remain calm on the skin, making them suitable for everyday use and for people who prefer a smoother, conditioned finish.
To put it simply, this is the character of our formula:
– a soft glide instead of squeaky friction
– a creamy foam instead of harsh bubbles
– a conditioned after-feel instead of dryness
This is how we craft every bar—intentionally, carefully, and always with the skin’s comfort in mind.
